It's about the Climb
September 9th, 2012
I just returned from Chicago after attending the yearly Meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. The opening ceremony on thursday featured a youth gospel choir--"The Soul Children of Chicago" who performed "The Climb"--popularized by Miley Cyrus. It was a very impactful performance, and I'd like to share the message with you.

For most of us, our lives are, at one time or another, challenging. We may endure problems with our health, our jobs, our relationships, or simply the daily stresses of life.
The song's lyrics mention that here will always be another "mountain". It's not about getting to the other side---it's about the climb---the journey.
Once we embrace how futile it is to expect that we will never face a challenge or struggle, we can begin to embrace, without discomfort, the journey for all that it can teach us.
Put another way-- Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but about learning to dance in the rain. And, as a patient admitted to me recently--after their lengthy recovery from rotator cuff surgery--"there is a often a rainbow on the near horizon."

How very true Dr. Tomaino! Yes, it's all about the climb- and the ability to face those challenges and struggles in the meantime. I feel so well i xcan relate to this !!! After two shoulder replacements and a broken arm I have had my opportunity to face challenges along the way. However, the key is how we deal with those challenges. In the journey of life we all have mountains to climb. The key to voercoming these challenges is how well we handle them along the way. With your help and guidance you helped me get through those stromy days!!! And you once told me you believed there was a rainbow in the future for me! I listened and believed and you were right! Now as i face other challenges in my life I will keep those words at hand- it can get you through those stormy days! thank you again Dr, Tomaino- you are the best in everything you do to provide expert care to all who have the opportunity to be in your care.
