Choose a Provider who is Accountable for Your Care
November 9th, 2008
In the Rochester and Upstate NY region many families who are not eligible for medicaid because of income level, still cannot afford a level of insurance that provides significant "bells and whistles".
Excellus BC/BS and Preferred Care offer Medicaid managed care "OPTION" plans that are more affordable-- and in todays economic environment, increasingly utilized. However, an historic culture still exists among many providers who do not accept these insurances and may direct patients with these plans to "clinics" where residents in training or physician-assistants are leveraged in order to provide care.
The "culture" treats these patients as if they are, in a sense, not deserving of top tier care because of lower reimbursement to the physician, and it's argued, that they are still getting good care.
In fact, Preferred Care Option and Blue Choice Option plans reimburse the physician close to Medicare rates in many cases AND many excellent physicians in the area DO ACCEPT these plans.
Therefore, before resigning oneself to being treated in a "clinic" where you may not be confident that a specific physician is accountable for your care--all aspects thereof (should you have a complication etc)--then go the next step:identify and see a doctor who is accountable--who will be there for you through thick and thin, and who accepts your insurance too.
